1. English comes from Germanic and French sources and was influenced by Latin and Norse.

2. This book is very interesting. I want to read it. Mary bought it yesterday. It has ten chapters, and each chapter contains many small parts. Every word in this book is used in every other of the millions of books that are written in English all over the world. In fact, nearly every word of English originated in Middle English. But there are plenty of English words that have not come from Middle English, such as those from Latin and Greek. There are still more words in English that were brought into English from other languages, including French, German and Icelandic. And then there are the new words we are creating today to describe things we can't imagine before they exist! We use about 4,000 words every day, but most of us know only a fraction of these—about 500. Of course, some people know much less than others. A person who understands 300 words is considered to have good understanding while one with 700 or more words is said to have excellent comprehension. (It depends on the speaker’s intention when speaking and listener’s need to understand, so no two conversations will be exactly alike).
