在中国传统12生肖中，狗的命运是充满灾祥色彩的。在中国一些地方，狗是贬义兽，人们将卑鄙无耻的人称为“狗东西”、“狗杂种”、“走狗”、“狗腿子”。还有“狗眼看人低”、“狗嘴里长不出象牙”、“狗急跳墙”、“狗拿耗子”、“狗咬吕洞宾，不识好人心”、“乌龟长疮狗舔痈（yong肿），自找苦吃”等等。狗是低贱和懦弱的象征。在西方文化中，“bitch”、“son of bitch”、“to eat out of the hand of a bitch”、“to be a wet dog”、“to lick sb's boots”等等也是贬义句或贬义词。狗是淫荡、屈辱和耻辱的象征。
在西方文化中也有不少关于dogs的美言，例如，one dog year等于seven human years；at the dog house；the dog days of summer；in the dog hole；a tail wagging the dog；you are nothing but a lucky dog；every dog has his /its day；as sick as a dog；not fit for a dog.狗在西方文化中，一方面，是任人摆布的家奴，另一方面，在人的眼中是人类的好朋友。因此有speak of the devil and he /she will appear。人们希望狗为人们服务，所以人们不希望狗死去，所以有like a dog with two tails 。西方谚语有言：when the cat is away， the mouse will play。
